Photography in general was regarded as a specialist hobby where only those who can afford the cameras would indulge themselves. Photography is sometimes also grouped together with other elitist hobbies such as golf. But times are changing and more individuals are taking up photography. Good quality cameras are becoming more affordable and more accessible to everyone of all backgrounds and income groups.
Lomography is a branch of photography that has been growing widely popular in the last 10 years here in Asia. Lomography emphasizes casual, snapshot photography. Characteristics such as over-saturated colors, off-kilter exposure, blurring, “happy accidents,” and alternative film processing are often considered part of the “Lomographic Technique. Users are encouraged to take a lighthearted approach to their photography, and use these techniques to document everyday life. Popular models in the market include Lomo LC-A, Diana, Holga, Holga 35mm, Actionsampler, Frogeye, Pop-9, Oktomat, Fisheye, Fisheye2, Colorsplash, Colorsplash Flash, F-stop Bang, SuperSampler, Horizon 202, Seagull TLR, and Smena 8M. Lomography has given birth to a range of photographers that emphasize on casual, artistic and spontaneous pictures.
One such “Lomographer” is Jimmy Phua from Singapore. The avid lomographer has had a long love affair with “The Art” and has an extensive portfolio to show for it. He started snapping away in 2004 and has not put his camera down since. He has even started a forum call LomotionSG with his partner Cindy aka Cyanwater to connect and just have a place for like minded individuals to share ideas and work with one another. To take it another step further he has even started his very own online store dubbed 8storeytree, which sells all lomographic related products. Some of Jimmy’s work has already been showcased in many exhibitions since 2006. His portfolio speaks for it self. Check it out.
